The Caroline Islands are a group of Pacific islands to the north of New Guinea, and include the islands of Ponape, Truk, and Yap. Originally claimed by Spain, they were ceded to Germany in 1899, but taken by Japan in 1914, and under Japanese control until after WWII. They later became the independent nation of Micronesia.
